Resources

Home Page

Although the course pages reference several resources specific to the content presented in class, this page lists a few of the more "generic" sites that are helpful for a wide variety of things.  I'll include more links as I find them, but my goal is to keep the list relatively succinct.  I did try to avoid links to sites that were just a list of links to other sites.

Each link will open in a new window.

Content

Resources

Students will likely find these sites more useful in that they are resources that are more about mathematical content.
bullet

Khan Academy - This it a great site for videos and extra practice on just about every concept we see in high school mathematics.  Students really like the fun "tone" of the lessons, too!

bullet

Math Forum - This link takes you to the "Ask Dr. Math" page, which is an archive of questions and answers for all levels of mathematics.  If you have a specific question, try searching here and there's a good chance someone else had asked it before.

bullet

Paul's Online Notes - I personally find this site helpful when looking up more advanced topics, although students also like the extras on the first page.

bullet

PurpleMath - This link takes you directly to this site's "topics" page.  I think this is a great place for those students looking to review specific algebra skills.

bullet

SOS Math - I like this site for its many examples by topic.

bullet

Wolfram Mathworld - When I get stumped for a formal definition for something in mathematics, this is the first place I look.  Much of it is considerably more advanced than what we see in high school, but I find it useful.

Instructional

Resources

These are just a few sites about instruction and curriculum, geared more for teachers than students.

bullet

AP Central - This is the College Board's site dedicated to all things Advanced Placement, a great resource for anyone teaching an AP course.

bullet

Common Core State Standards - This is more about curriculum than instruction, but here is a link to the CCSSI's page dedicated to mathematics.

bullet

Illuminations - Here is a link to NCTM's site loaded with activities and lessons, all geared toward their Principles and Standards of School Mathematics

bullet

Lesson Planet - This site has a lot of shared lessons and worksheets for all subjects.  It includes standards by state, too, but some seem to be outdated.

bullet

Natural Library of Virtual Manipulatives - This site has a collection of Java applets that can be used for a variety of activities.

bullet

Teachers' Domain - This site was recommended to me by another educator, and it focuses on using media in lessons.

Technology

Resources

Each of these sites could be included above as well, but students and teachers alike might find them useful.

bullet

Advanced Grapher - This is not a free graphing program - you can download a trial version here though - but is one I use a lot in class.  Great for presentations and projects.

bullet

Calculator Basics - This is a brief guide for some of the functionalities of the TI-83/84 we use in class.  In particular, it illustrates how to enter lists of data, create a scatter plot, and find the line of best fit.  There is also a little troubleshooting information as well.

bullet

GCalc - Of all the free online graphing calculators out there, this is one of the easier ones to use.

bullet

GeoGebra - This is a free graphing program that does well with both algebraic and geometric illustrations.  It can be a little less intuitive for some, but does have more capabilities than other programs.

bullet

Geometer's Sketchpad - This is the main page for one of the most popular software applications used in geometry and other mathematics courses.  It has links to many student and teacher resources.

bullet

Texas Instruments - This is TI's Education Technology site, which has a ton of resources for calculators and other products.  Teachers will like their classroom activities.

bullet

ticalc.org - For those looking for a program for their calculator, this is the place to go.  Search the archives and you can find anything.

bullet

Wolfram Alpha - This is an amazing computational site, complete with tons of examples.

Miscellaneous

Resources

This section is a little thin at the moment... I'm hoping to add a bit more in the future.

bullet

Cut-The-Knot - If you like mathematical puzzles, this is just a cool site.

bullet

US Census Bureau - This is a great site if you are looking for various data for projects or lessons.
